COLLAPSOSCAPE

Based on a personal experience with persistent crashes of music software, this project employs an everyday frustration with technological glitches as a point of departure for the creative artistic process via ritualistic rite of passage.

This state of collapse – a loss of rational treatment, a loss of belief in one's capacities to understand the technology and to control it, a loss of trust in the friendly partnership between human and technology is turned into a joyful, sovereign, libertine music happening.
In this process, chaos becomes a creative step further beyond the realm of traditional controlled world.

Operation systems sounds (e.g. Mac, Linux, Windows), which have become a hidden but omnipresent feature of our everyday sound environment, are employed as a dominant musical texture of the installation.
The visitor’s voice is mixed in the final composition, which is entirely based on the operation system sounds of the visitor’s choice, so the final soundscape is a personalized composition for each visitor. In consequence, this results in a individualized and unique “instant collapso-symphony” for system and human sounds. In turn, this is combined with a visual accompaniment consisting of computer error code and a “riot” dance performance depicting the ritualistic destruction of technology in a desert of California.
