PROJECT INFORMATION
Based on a personal experience with persistent crashes of music software, Collapsoscape employs the everyday frustration of technological glitches as a point of departure for a creative process conceived as a ritualistic rite of passage.
This state of collapse — a loss of rational control, a loss of belief in one’s ability to understand and control technology, and a loss of trust in the seemingly friendly partnership between human and machine — is transformed into a joyful, sovereign and libertine musical happening.
In this process, chaos becomes a creative step beyond the realm of the traditionally controlled world.
HOW THE iNSTALLATION WORKS
Operating-system sounds (Mac, Linux, Windows), which have become a hidden yet omnipresent feature of our everyday sonic environment, form the dominant musical texture of the installation.
The visitor’s voice is incorporated into a composition based entirely on the sounds of the operating system of their choice. Each resulting soundscape is therefore personalized, creating an individualized and unique “instant collapso-symphony” for system and human sounds.
The sound is triggers the visual component consisting of computer error codes and a “riot” dance performance depicting the ritualistic destruction of technology in the California desert.
