THIS IS NOT A REALLY PLEASANT SOUND

interactive multimedia installation

“This Is Not A Really Pleasant Sound” is an interactive sound installation inspired by the decline of the glass manufacturing industry and subsequent social fallout in northern Czech Republic. The sound element of the installation, which is triggered by audience movement through the glass curtains, uses multiple pitches of glass grinding and found sounds from a factory environment.

As the majority of glass factories were closing down in late 00s, Lenka Morávková acquired over 20,000 premium quality Czech glass beads which she used in the installation as a physical representation of traditional local craftsmanship.

The interactivity demonstrates the breakdown of collaboration on a local level and the sale of proprietary held knowledge to cheap markets in Asia, which has led to an increase in competition on a global level.
By allowing the audience to wander through the liminal, glittering space and interact with the glass curtains, the artist highlights the correlations between the delicate aesthetics of glass and the harsh work routine involved in its industrial production. Thus, the project engages with the topic of maintenance of local traditions in the context of the global socio-economic framework.
