GLASS SPILLED OVER THE BROKEN BATHTUB

multimedia show / experimental documentary

Glass Spilled Out From the Broken Bathtub is a socio-critical audiovisual symphony, analyzing an unprecedented situation at the moment of its potential demise. An experimental 30-minute sound documentary portrays a situation of the composer’s home region, in the Northern Czech Republic, famous for its glassmaking tradition. Previously the most developed industry has been in a decline for several years; glassworks, manufacturers and design shops go bankrupt; workers end up on welfare and students from local art schools cannot find jobs in the field.
The project displays a critical probe into the problem, combining alarming interviews with the local people, who are directly affected by the crisis, with sounds and images from the local glassworks and small glass workshops, while showing various stages of glassmaking. The final music piece, composed entirely from authentic field-recordings from glass factories, is accompanied live by improvisation on glass materials (or Cristal Baschet instrument) along with magical interplay of light spectra in space. In between an abstract meditation and a socio-critical manifesto, this project establishes a discussion about possible future of local industry in the frame of global economics and is dedicated to those who have lost all hope, as well as those who still keep on trying.

For the special purpose of the performance on International Glass Symposium, the first Cristal Baschet instrument was constructed in the Czech Republic.

The live performance can be completed by a round table with the artists and academics discussing the topic of local traditions on the global market.

The performance can include english/spanish/ subtitles.
